The
next morning (Saturday, June 2nd) we visited 'Hellenic Cosmos',
a Cultural Centre of vital importance. 'Hellenic Cosmos' is an old
industrial place that has been converted into a modern building
to house the Cultural Centre of the Foundation of the Hellenic
World and it is open daily. The Foundation (FHW) was established
in 1993 by Lazaros Efraimoglou and his family and its aim
is to encourage the awareness, understanding and the promotion of
Hellenic history and culture by means of modern technology.
Many pedagogues, educators, historians, graphic designers, computer
engineers and producers of audiovisual materials collaborate in
the creation of educational programmes and exhibitions.
In the Cultural Centre there are:
The Computer Room, where the students
can travel to the 'Hellenic History on the Internet'. At the same
time they are informed about the use of multimedia all over the
world.
The Projection Room, where archaeological
documentaries are presented. One of these is 'Miletos…a four dimensional
City'. This documentary based on material of archaeological excavations,
represents the buildings of Miletos in three dimensions. Another
documentary presents a journey to the coast of Asia Minor, called
'Asia Minor…searching for what still remains from the past'.
The Virtual Reality Sector, a big room
the walls of which are screens of projection. The students putting
on special plastic glasses can move to an imaginary world and experience
historical representations. The viewer has the illusion that he
is experiencing and interacting with the projected virtual environment.
Have you ever tried to visit with your imagination an ancient city,
not what remains from the past, but to visit it during the time
it was flourishing?
We did it however difficult it seems to be! We visited ancient Miletos,
the 'Metropolis of Ionia', a city with a developed town planning
and famous philosophers (Thales, Anaximandros, Anaximenes). We managed
to navigate to the temple of Delphinion Apollo, the Bouleuterion,
the Hellenistic Gymnasium, the Ionian Stoa and the North Stoa. We
even swam in the harbour of Miletos. |
| Quite
impressive was the exhibition 'Krossia,
Chitones, Doulamades, Velades, 4000 years of Hellenic costume'.
This innovative exhibition presented a panorama of Hellenic costume
from prehistory until the dawn of the 20th century. Theatricality
is the hallmark of this exhibition. Multimedia installations, photographic
material, videos and life-like figures dressed in reproductions
of ethnic costume, create a unique, multisensory presentation. |

We
were also greatly impressed by Lefkos, an
interactive guide robot
that took us around the exhibits and at the same time it guided
everybody who was on line and connected with the site of the
Foundation of the Hellenic World.
