....During the First World War Eleftheria was located in the same place where this settlement lies at present. It was the barracks of the English and French troops. And in that wooden barracks in 1920 the refugees from Pontos were settled.

....Later on after the catastrophe in Asia Minor, refugees from all over Asia Minor were accommodated there until 1928.


....After this date, in 1936 the refugees who were still there established the settlement of Harmankioi which means in Turkish "Threshing village" because this was its use during the Turkish conquest.

....In 1924 it was named Eleftheria after Eleftherios Venizelos who visited the place.

....Neo Kordelio was established in 1924 by refugees from Asia Minor who were settled there by the Committee for the Settlement for Refugees (CSF) and other Greek areas (internal immigration).

....Most of the inhabitants came from a town of Asia Minor, 13 kilometres away from Smyrni, Kordelio which was also known as Peraea and Karsi Giaka (Opposite Shore) where about 15000 Greeks used to live before the Catastrophe in Asia Minor.

....During 1927-1928 refugees from Basiliko in Eastern Thrace were settled in Eleftherio-Kordelio.

....Later on Sarakatsani from the neighbouring countries were added and nowadays there are 6,000 of them in the area.
....Finally, in the '90s a large number of emigrants who returned to Greece from former USSR inhabited the Municipality of Eleftherio-Kordelio.

....The Municipality nowadays is considered to be one of the most developing municipalities and the citizens of this borough excel in many social, cultural and financial fields.

....The 285 refugees that first came here, today constitute about 32,000 active citizens sharing the same vision: "Turn the Municipality of Eleftherio-Kordelio into a modern Municipality maintaining its decent, friendly and hospitable characteristics". After all a place counts on its citizens...
